RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - Update on June 13: Containment on the Trail Fire has reached 100%.

JUNE 12 7 P.M. UPDATE: Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue expects no more updates until Thursday. Crews will remain on scene mopping up overnight.

JUNE 12 11:19 A.M. UPDATE: Containment on the Trail Fire has now reached 40%.

A trail fire sparked near Red Rock, East of Peavine around 3:45 on Tuesday afternoon. “Yesterday was certainly a shot across the bow for those in the fire service,” said Adam Mayberry, TMFR Public Information Officer.

A fire fueled by wind and dry vegetation kept multiple fire agencies busy. “We are about 3 weeks ahead of where we would normally be given the dry conditions. Given that we had very robust winters the past two years, that has created a lot of vegetation.” But that is not the only challenge crews were facing. “We had nearly 20 agencies throughout Washoe County, into California, into nearby counties. It was very taxing. At some point, we had to take some resources off of the trail, which was generally controlled, and bring them over to the Sullivan fire in Sparks,” added Mayberry.

Earlier today, Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue reported, the Trail Fire burned 193 acres and is 40% contained. A significant amount of damage for this region. “We all have to work together to ensure that we reduce the wildfire risk throughout the Truckee Meadows and our region and not engage in outdoor activities that could spark fires.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but nearly 90% of wildfires are caused by humans or a lightning strike. But there were no storms on Tuesday. “We really encourage folks, if you’re out in the wildland, to have small hand tools, some water, so in the event that you inadvertently start a fire you can put that fire out quickly.”

Providing structure protection is one of fire crews priorities but you can add your own line of defense. “Candidly, those homes that have good defensible space are going to be a higher priority for us to protect. It is easier, it keeps our crews safer.”

Along with an evacuation plan to avoid delaying fire crew resources and response times. “We do have a lot of folks that tend to want to pull to the side of the road or insert themselves into the scene and take pics. But really what you are doing is delaying our access to the scene.”
