Reno Rodeo, 'To Kill a Mockingbird' on tap for holiday week in Northern Nevada (2024)

It's a shortened week ahead (or perhaps two very short weeks) as Nevada celebrates Juneteenth on Wednesday; most state and federal offices will be closed. This week is also the start of the 10-day Reno Rodeo, which opens with a Wednesday night kickoff concert;

While much of the rest of the country will grapple with high temperatures, Northern Nevada begins the week with relatively cool weather, including highs in the 70s in the valleys on Monday and Tuesday.

Here's a look at the week ahead for June 17-23, 2024.

Reno-Tahoe events, June 17-23

Menopause: The Musical, June 18-23: This is a return engagement for this traveling show that pokes musical fun at women and aging with some funny and sometimes poignant tunes. Shows take place at 7 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Performances are at the Showroom, Eldorado Hotel Casino, 345 N. To Kill a Mockingbird, June 18-23: Aaron Sorkin's stage adaptation of Harper Lee's acclaimed novel is coming to the Pioneer Center for a limited six-day run. Performances are Tuesday through Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 1 and 7 p.m. at 100 S. Virginia St. in Reno. Juneteenth Day Party, June 19: The Northern Nevada Black Cultural Awareness Society is hosting a day party with music, food trucks, live performances and more to celebrate Juneteenth. It's set for the Glow Plaza at the J Resort, 670 W. 4th St. in Reno, from noon to 3 p.m. Admission is free with a $5 suggested donation. For details, visit the NNBCAS Facebook page.

Reno Rodeo Kickoff Concert, June 19: Country singer-songwriter Russell Dickerson ("Yours," "Blue Tacoma," "Every Litttle Thing") is the headliner for the show on Wednesday. The show also features Priscilla Block ("You, Me, & Whiskey," "Just About Over You") and local band Jake's Garage 5.0. Food Truck Friday, June 21:Food Truck Friday is back with a50-vendor cuisine lineupincluding American, Mexican, Asian fusion, Southern, Mediterranean, Brazilian and so many more. ’90s House Party, June 21: It’s a fun lineup if you were into rap, R&B or dance music in that decade (as well as the two prior ones). The lineup includes the Sugarhill Gang, credited with one of the first popular rap hits with 1979’s “Rapper’s Delight.” It still features original member Wonder Mike and Master Gee. Young MC had a huge hit debut album and a top-10 song with “Bust a Move” in 1989. And C+C Music Factory had tons of pop and dance chart hits, including “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now),” starting in 1989. Rapper Freedom Williams leads this lineup. Aaron Lewis, June 21-22: In concert, this singer-songwriter plays acoustic-styled songs from his main band Staind like “It’s Been Awhile” and “Outside” as well as solo hits like “Country Boy” and “Sinner.” Both of Lewis’ shows begin at 7:30 p.m. at TJ’s Corral, Carson Valley Inn, 1627 Highway 395 North, Minden. Lake Tahoe is for Lovers 2024, June 22: This national touring festival put together by and featuring longtime emo-rock band Hawthorne Heights also includes other bands such as The All American-Rejects, Movements, The Starting Line and Finch. Lamont Landers, June 22: This soul-rock guitarist from Alabama became a TikTok sensation a few years ago with his homemade videos and now is touring the country with his own album releases. Monday: Sunny, with highs near 70 in the valleys, and in the 60s at higher elevations. Mostly clear overnight, with lows in the mid-40s in the valleys and in the low 30s to low 40s at higher elevations.

Tuesday: Sunny, with highs in the upper 70s in the valleys and in the low 60s to low 70s at higher elevations. Mostly clear overnight, with lows in the upper 40s in the valleys and in the mid-30s to mid-40s at higher elevations.

Wednesday: Sunny, with highs in the low 80s in the valleys and in the upper 60s to upper 70s at higher elevations. Mostly clear overnight, with lows in the low 50s in the valleys and in the 40s at higher elevations.

Thursday: Sunny, with highs in the upper 80s in the valleys and in the mid-70s to mid-80s at higher elevations. Mostly clear overnight, with lows in the upper 50s in the valleys and in the mid-40s to mid-50s at higher elevations.

Friday: Sunny, with highs in the low 90s in the valleys and in the upper 70s at higher elevations. Mostly clear overnight, with lows near 60 in the valleys and in the upper 40s at higher elevations.

Saturday: Sunny, with highs in the mid-90s in the valleys and in the low 80s at higher elevations. Mostly clear overnight, with lows in the low 60s in the valleys and in the low 50s at higher elevations.

Sunday: Sunny, with highs in the upper 90s in the valleys and in the mid-80s at higher elevations. Mostly clear overnight, with lows in the mid-60s in the valleys and in the low 50s at higher elevations.

Reno-Tahoe roads, June 17-23

U.S. 395, Gardnerville: The Nevada Department of Transportation is resurfacing U.S. 395 through downtown Gardnerville between Waterloo Lane and First Street. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in either direction; drivers should expect moderate delays. Work is expected to continue through September.

I-580, south Reno: Southbound I-580 will see lane reductions near the Summit Mall while crews flatten bridge transitions over South Virginia Street. Overnight lane reductions will take place between Mt. Rose Highway and South Meadows Parkway between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m., with periodic overnight ramp closures at Mt. Rose Highway, South Meadows Parkway and Damonte Ranch Parkway, through early summer.

Steamboat Parkway, south Reno: Crews will expand the stretch of Steamboat Parkway from four lanes to six between Marketplace Drive and Veterans Parkway through November.

U.S. 395, North Valleys: Northbound traffic will continue be reduced to two lanes on U.S. 395 through mid-2025 due to NDOT's work to widen U.S. 395 between North McCarran Boulevard and Golden Valley Road. The on-ramp at Panther Valley north of Reno will be closed through late 2024.

U.S. 395 north of Topaz Lake: Single-lane closures will take place in one-mile sections from the state line to Ray May Way between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. on weekdays through August as NDOT repaves the roadway. Reduced speed limits will be in place. Drivers should expect travel delays of up to 30 minutes.
