DISTRICT. TOMMY THOMPSON IS KEEPING A CLOSE EYE ON THIS CONVENTION AS A DELEGATE, AND FORMER GOVERNOR. HE’S A BIG AMBASSADOR FOR WISCONSIN AND NO STRANGER TO POLITICAL CONVENTIONS. WE SPOKE WITH HIM ABOUT THAT TONIGHT. GOVERNOR, THANK YOU FOR JOINING US. THIS IS YOUR 12TH CONVENTION. IT IS WHAT SETS THIS ONE APART FROM THE OTHERS THAT YOU’VE BEEN TO. IT’S IN WISCONSIN. IT’S IN MILWAUKEE. AND EVERYBODY IS RECOGNIZING WHAT A BEAUTIFUL STATE WE HAVE. I’VE BEEN PRAYING AND AND HOPING FOR A LONG TIME. THE MORE PEOPLE THAT SEE WISCONSIN GET A CHANCE TO LOOK AT THE NICETIES OF OUR PEOPLE IN THE HOSPITALITY, THEY WILL FALL IN LOVE WITH IT, WHICH THEY’RE DOING, AND THEY’RE GOING TO COME BACK ON TOURISM AND VISIT AND SPEND SOME TIME HERE. THAT’S WHAT I LOVE. THAT’S WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT. AND I WANT TO ASK YOU, WHAT HAS YOUR WHAT HAVE YOUR CONVERSATIONS BEEN LIKE WITH EVERYONE VISITING HERE? DO THEY TELL YOU THEY’RE GOING TO COME BACK AND EVEN SPEND MORE MONEY, GET THE ECONOMY GOING HERE. YOU KNOW, IT’S AMAZING. I ASKED HIM, HOW DO THEY LIKE MILWAUKEE? HOW DO YOU LIKE WISCONSIN? SAID, WE NEVER BEEN HERE BEFORE. WE DIDN’T REALLY KNOW IF WE WERE COMING. WE DIDN’T. WE DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT MILWAUKEE. WE’RE HERE. WE LOVE IT. WE’RE COMING BACK. YOU KNOW THAT KIND OF ENTHUSIASM GETS ME EXCITED. YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS STATE AND HOW MUCH I LOVE MILWAUKEE AND HOW I’M ABLE TO, YOU KNOW, GET PEOPLE ENCOURAGE THEM TO COME BACK IS REALLY TO ME, A POWERFUL THING. THIS IS A FANTASTIC MESSAGE. THE WORLD IS LOOKING AT US TONIGHT AND BE ABLE TO TOMORROW NIGHT WHEN DONALD TRUMP COMES, EVERYBODY IN THE IN THE WORLD, NOT EVERYBODY, BUT A GOOD CHUNK OF THE WORLD IS GOING TO BE WATCHING. AND THEY’RE GOING TO SEE MILWAUKEE. THEY’RE GOING TO SEE WISCONSIN. AND THEY’RE GOING TO SEE WHAT AN EXCEPTIONAL CONVENTION THIS IS. GOVERNOR SWITCHING TOPICS HERE A LITTLE BIT TO TALK ABOUT THE THEME THAT’S BEEN HERE AT INSIDE FISERV FORUM INSIDE THIS NOW TRANSFORMED FISERV FORUM. A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT UNITY. HOW DO WE BRING THIS COUNTRY TOGETHER WITH YOUR EXPERIENCE AS A GOVERNOR, AS A POLITICIAN HERE AND REALLY REPRESENTING IN ALL PARTS OF THE COUNTRY? HAVE YOU SEEN OUR COUNTRY AS DIVIDED AS WE’VE SEEN IT? THIS YEAR? AND I DON’T THINK IT’S EVER BEEN THIS DIVIDED, EXCEPT RIGHT BEFORE THE CIVIL WAR AND THAT WAS ANOTHER TIME, YOU KNOW, WHEN THE WHOLE COUNTRY WAS DIVIDED. BUT RIGHT NOW, TODAY, IT’S EXTREMELY DIVIDED. IT’S ABOUT 45% DEMOCRAT, 45% REPUBLICAN, AND ABOUT 10% THAT HAVE MADE UP THEIR MIND LEAN ONE WAY OR THE OTHER, BUT ARE NOT DECLARED. BUT I THINK IT’S REALLY HAPPENING AFTER THAT NEAR ASSASSIN, UH, ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON DONALD TRUMP. I THINK PEOPLE REFLECTING MAYBE WE’VE GONE TOO FAR. MAYBE WE WERE JUST TOO TO, UH, POLARIZED. MAYBE WE SHOULD TAKE A STEP BACK AND START TALKING INSTEAD OF SHOUTING. AND MAYBE WE CAN GET THIS DONE. THEN JOE BIDEN, THE PRESIDENT, CAME BACK FROM DELAWARE. HE HAD A SPEECH LAST SUNDAY NIGHT AND SAYS, WE’VE GONE TOO FAR. AND I THINK THURSDAY NIGHT, TOMORROW NIGHT, THE LAST DAY OF THIS CONVENTION, DONALD TRUMP IS GOING TO GIVE A SPEECH LIKE YOU’VE NEVER HEARD DONALD TRUMP GIVE BEFORE. I JUST FEEL THAT HE’S GOING TO RESONATE WITH THE FEELING IS IN AMERICA THAT IT’S TIME TO START SOLVING OUR PROBLEMS AND WORKING TOGETHER, AND I THINK THAT IS GOING TO BE THE CATALYST THROUGH THE ELECTION, TO GET US BACK TO A POSITION OF COOPERATION, CONSIDERATION AND UNDERSTANDING. SO WE HAVE TIME TO RECOVER FROM THIS. YES, WE DO. WE WE’VE HAD THIS PROBLEM BEFORE BACK TO THE CIVIL WAR. YOU COME BACK, YOU KNOW, THE THE THE CLOCK SHIFTS BACK AND FORTH. BUT RIGHT NOW IT’S GONE TOO FAR. AND I THINK IT’S GOING TO START SWINGING BACK TO THE MIDDLE. AND I THINK PEOPLE ARE GOING TO SAY, DONALD TRUMP IS GOING IS THE RIGHT CANDIDATE AT THE RIGHT TIME. I DON’T THINK THERE’S ANY QUESTION BUT THAT HE’S GOING TO GET ELECTED. YOU KNOW, AFTER THAT ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT. BUT WHEN HE GOT UP OFF THE FLOOR, PUT HIS FIST IN THE AIR, THE BLOOD STREAMING DOWN HIS FACE, AND THE AND THE AMERICAN FLAG FURLING IN THE BACKGROUND WITH HIS FIST IN THE AIR, SAYING, FIGHT ON. I DON’T THINK ANYBODY IS GOING TO EVER DISCOUNT DONALD TRUMP EVER AGAIN. HE’S A FIGHTER, AND I THINK THAT’S GOING TO CARRY THROUGH. I THINK IT’S GOING TO BE A GREAT REPUBLICAN YEAR. THE DEMOCRATS ARE DIVIDED, AND I DON’T KNOW IF THEY EVEN UNDERSTAND THAT WHERE THEY’RE GOING TO GO. I DON’T THINK THEY DO. AND I THINK THIS CONVENTION HAS BROUGHT ALL THE REPUBLICANS TOGETHER. I’VE BEEN GOING, AS YOU SAID, 48 YEARS. I’VE NEVER SEEN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. SO SOLIDIFIED. SO HAPPY, SO ENCOURAGED TO BE WORKING WITH EACH OTHER. LOOK AHEAD TO NOVEMBER. WHERE DOES WISCONSIN FIT INTO THAT EQUATION? WHAT ROLE IS WISCONSIN GOING TO PLAY IN THE ELECTION? WISCONSIN IS THE NUMBER ONE STATE. WE HAVE TEN ELECTORAL VOTES. I TALKED TO DONALD TRUMP WHEN HE WAS IN RACINE, AND I SAID, IF WE CARRY WISCONSIN, YOU’RE THE NEXT PRESIDENT. HE SAID, I KNOW THAT TOMMY. YOU GOT TO HELP ME GET THERE. AND I SAID, I WILL. AND I’M FAIRLY CONFIDENT THAT WE’RE GOING TO CARRY WISCONSIN. THIS CONVENTION HAS HELPED THE ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT, EVEN THOUGH IT WAS A TERRIBLE THING FOR OUR COUNTRY. I THINK IT’S GOING TO HELP DONALD TRUMP BECAUSE PEOPLE THINK PEOPLE ARE TAKING ANOTHER LOOK AT HIM. I THINK HIS SPEECH TOMORROW NIGHT IS GOING TO DRIVE US TOWARDS MORE UNITY, MORE UNDERSTANDING. AND I’M HOPEFUL BECAUSE THAT’S WHERE I AM. I WANT PEOPLE TO WORK TOGETHER. I WANT US TO SOLVE OUR PROBLEMS AND I AM CONFIDENT THAT’S WHAT’S GOING TO TAKE PLACE. YOU TALKED ABOUT HIS SPEECH TOMORROW NIGHT. WHAT TONE DOES HE NEED TO STRIKE? WHAT DOES HE NEED TO SAY TOMORROW NIGHT? HE NEEDS TO SAY WE ARE ALL AMERICANS. WE HAVE A COUNTRY THAT IS THE GREATEST IN THE WORLD, AND I WANT TO LEAD THAT COUNTRY. BUT WE GOT TO WORK TOGETHER. ALL OF US HAVE GOT A STAKE IN THIS. LET’S BUILD IT TOGETHER. LET’S NOT GET DIVIDED UP AND BE SO PARTIZAN. LET’S FIND A WAY THAT WE CAN WORK TOGETHER AND BUILD THIS COUNTRY. THAT’S WHAT HE’S GOT TO SAY. AND I’M CONFIDENT HE’S GOING TO DO IT. GOVERNOR. GOVERNOR, THANK YOU SO
