Elk Grove was founded in 1850 as a stage stop for travelers coming from Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area, when the Elk Grove Hotel and Stage Stop was opened by James Hall and the town was named after it.

Named for the native elk that roamed the northern Illinois forests and grasslands, Elk Grove Village was initially settled in 1834 by pioneer New England farmers. By 1848, German-immigrant farmers soon settled in the area, establishing a thriving community that would eventually become Elk Grove Village.

Right now, the zoo sits on almost 15 acres of land at William Land Park, but the plan is to build the new zoo near Kammerer Road and Lotz Parkway, which would expand it to 65 acres. For Mindi Dimaano and others in her Elk Grove neighborhood, the project is more or less in their backyard.

Elk Grove, California (population 130,000) is located about 15 miles south of Sacramento. The town was established in 1850 and its proximity to historic Sutter's Fort made it a crossroads for business, entertainment, mail service and agriculture, as well as home base for gold miners in nearby communities.

Elk Grove Union High School, created in September of 1893, was the second high school in Sacramento County, and it was the first union high schoolin California.
